Opening Thoughts (Entry # 1)

Hello everyone, before I give any ideas and opinions about the novel, "The Wars" by Timothy Findley I would like to analyze some important literary features on the cover page of this novel. I feel that before reading the novel one should take the time to view any significant words or images or symbols on cover page of the book. In doing so this will provide a basis for understanding the nature of the novel. Even though this understanding might be vague it will help when you read the novel beause you can refer to these images or words or symbols and hopefully have a much better understanding of the key concepts in the novel. To start off this post I would like to talk about my first impressions on the cover design. Usually when one sees a cover for a novel the title of the book is located somewhere at the top of the page and then the author(s) names are at the bottom of the page but the format of the cover design for this novel is unconventional because the author's name is at the top and right below the title of the novel is given. There are five images which standout to me, these images are:
  • the three grey clouds which look like sphagetti strings
  • the cardinal with a black raging horse
  • the cardinal with the arrow
  • a revolver
  • orange and red flames

  • All these images are illustrated on a grey rainy background. This suggests a gloomy tone. The illustration of the rain drops and the fire contrast each other. Either the rain is taking over the fire or the fire is expanding and not letting the rain destroy it. So two powerful forces of nature can be observed the rain and the fire.
